Core strength and mat Pilates: what your core really does.

Your core is more than your abs. Here is what it is, how mat Pilates works it, and how each Sora class type brings a different kind of core work.

Ask most people about their core and they will point to their abs. In Pilates, the core means much more: the deep muscles that wrap around your middle and support the way you stand, sit, lift and move. Mat Pilates is built around training that support with control.

What we mean by your core

Your core includes the deep abdominal muscles, the muscles along your spine, your pelvic floor, your diaphragm, and the muscles around your hips. Together they keep you steady while your arms and legs move.

Pilates focuses on control, alignment and breath rather than speed, so you learn to engage these muscles deliberately. Researchers who reviewed how Pilates is defined found core control and breathing among its most common principles.

How mat Pilates works your core

On the mat, your body weight is the resistance. Slow, controlled movements ask your core to keep you stable as you move, and small adjustments in position can make an exercise more or less challenging.

Breath is part of it too. Coordinating your breath with each movement helps you find the right muscles and keep them working without holding tension elsewhere.
